HISTORY
The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is a unidirectional, grade 1 FIA specification 3.426-mile (5.513 km) motor racing facility located in Elroy, on the southeastern periphery of Austin city limits, in Central Texas. COTA plays host to the MotoGP Grand Prix of The Americas, the Formula One United States Grand Prix, the FIA World Endurance Championship, as well as the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The circuit and Grand Prix were first proposed in the middle of 2010. The track was the first in the United States to be purpose-built for Formula One. The layout was conceived by promoter Tavo Hellmund and 1993 Motorcycle World Champion Kevin Schwantz with the assistance of German architect and circuit designer Hermann Tilke. The venue has a capacity for 120,000 fans, a near 41m-elevation change with a steep climb at the end of the pit straight followed by a sharp left, and a total of 20 corners, 11 left and 9 right which always guarantees exciting racing.
