It was a hectic Moto3™ race that took place in Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on Sunday, with Red Bull GASGAS Tech3's Daniel Holgado fighting for the win all the way until the checkered flag, but eventually he finished second, 0.035 seconds to the winner. From his P17 on the grid, Jacob Roulstone delivered a solid performance, finishing in the points in 12th, a good result that sees him gain back some confidence after a few difficult rounds.
Starting from 7th on the grid, Daniel Holgado took a decent start alongside the front group. He took the lead, but Ivan Ortola and Angel Piqueras immediately fought back after three laps, he was up to 2nd chasing provisional leader Ivan Ortola as the two had made a 1.4 seconds-gap on the chasing group, led by David Alonso. The front-two was holding their pace, but behind there was Alonso coming back with fast laps, and half way through, he had completely closed the gap on Holgado, having brought with him Tayio Furusato and Joel Kelso. Lap 13 was the one where on-fire Furusato got the best of both Holgado and Ortola to move up first, with the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 rider sitting third with just 6 laps to the checkered flag. Three laps remained, Holgado fought back and made the extra effort to take the lead ahead of Alonso and Furusato. 2 laps to go. Alonso was close, 0.074 seconds, waiting for his opportunity, as always. These two went into a tense battle for the win, constantly overtaking each other, but it was still Holgado at the lead exiting the penultimate lap. Beware of Angel Piqueras who was close too, and moved through Alonso. After the straight line, Piqueras took the lead while Alonso had gone down. Dani was second, preparing the final attack. He exited the final corner in 2nd looking for Piqueras’ slipstream, but it was the rookie who came on top to clinch his first Moto3™ victory, leaving Holgado with an excellent P2 finish, just 0.035 seconds from the victory.
The start could have been bad for Australian rookie Jacob Roulstone who managed to make his way through the chaos at the front in the opening lap, and he found himself in 13th after one lap. Eventually, Angel Piqueras came back after completing a double long lap penalty, and he passed Roulstone on lap 5. The rookie focused on his riding style, on his race pace, and delivered a solid performance. He was overtaken by Vicente Perez and shortly after Aragón podium finisher Luca Lunetta and was in 15th with 8 laps remaining. 8 laps to try to hold that point-scoring position. Progressively, Roulstone gained positions to finish his race with a decent pace, and that’s P12 for the rookie in San Marino, who is finally back in the points after some difficult rounds! Good weekend overall for the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 Moto3™ squad. A small week to recover, and we will be back in two weeks in Misano for the European final round before the oversea tour!
