The Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich was good to the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 squad after Daniel Holgado reunited with the podium for the first time since the French Grand Prix back in May, claiming the final step of the podium at the Red Bull Ring. Jacob Roulstone managed to score two solid points, finishing 14th.
Leading row 2, there was Daniel Holgado ready to fight for a podium, with the last to date at the French Grand Prix. Last minute drama saw pole sitter Ivan Ortola exit the track a few seconds before the race start, leaving Dani with no one left in his corridor. As lights went out, Dani powered himself at the front, exiting T1 in second. A front-three took the lead of the show, as Dani chased a 1-2 Joel Kelso-David Munoz, with a 0.9 seconds gap to the chasing group led by Colin Veijer. On lap 7, the #96 took the lead ahead of the BOE Motorsports squad, but the fight for the lead allowed Viejer and Rueda to reduce their gap to them. 8 laps done, and the front-three became a front seven closed by Angel Piqueras, as the chasing group had now completely closed the gap. Meanwhile, the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 rider was setting the pace at the front, but the likes of David Alonso and Colin Veijer were clocking faster lap times. Eventually these two took the lead of the group the next lap, with Dani third on lap 11. As we started to foresee the end of the race, positions started to move quite a lot with all riders getting ready for their final laps. Five laps to go. Dani was in 4th, behind Alonso at the lead, and Munoz-Piqueras. Dani sat in third as two laps remained, but all riders were so close and it was still impossible to predict who would make it to the top step. In the final lap, Dani managed to go on the inside of T1 to move up to second, close behind Alonso, but there was rookie Piqueras and Munoz so close in his back wheel. Holgado exited the final corner in 2, but it did it a bit wide and eventually that allowed Munoz to pass the checkered flag in second. Very narrow margin, 0.005 seconds, and Daniel Holgado finished third in the Austrian Grand Prix ! Bravo Dani!
From his fifteenth position on the grid, Jacob Roulstone stuck within his group at the race start, and gained three positions in 3 laps to sit very close to the top 10. The Australian was in a group alongside Ricccardo Rossi, X Zurutuza, Stefano Nepa, and M Bertelle, as they battled it out for the head of the group, the 10th position. As ten laps remained, Jacob was in 11th as he made a move on Nepa. A few laps later, the rookie made his top 10 entrance, getting the better of Yamanaka. The group ahead was 5.5 seconds away, so the focus at that time remained in trying to hold that lead on his group. However, Ivan Ortola, pole sitter forced to start from the back following an issue on the grid, had made a huge comeback and overtook the whole group. Jacob dropped to 11th again, and shortly after we saw him drop to P15. A late penalty from another rider meant that he saw the checkered flag in 14th.
The Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 squad will stay for another day in Spielberg, as the team attends a test on Monday!
