Another very intense Moto3™ race took place on Sunday morning at the Sachsenring for the Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, marking the end of the first half of 2024 and the start of the summer break. While David Alonso grabbed the win, Daniel Holgado finished the race in seventh to retain his third place in the championship heading to the summer break, while Jacob Roulstone sadly crashed while he was doing an incredible race.
Starting from P13 on the grid, Holgado exited lap one in P15, but progressively he moved up the ranks as he settled into his race pace. With 18 laps to go, Holgado was in 7th in a very open leading group. With his teammate close in the back wheel as they chased Munoz. As the battle went on, we saw a front four digging a small gap ahead, and Holgado was in sixth fighting for 5th with Munoz. As ten laps remained, Holgado had let the Leopard racing squad of Adrian Fernandez and Angel Piqueras move up and he sat in 7th, all fighting for top 5. At that time, the leading group was wide open, and all riders were so close, promising an end with fireworks! With six laps to go, Holgado had made it to 4th, with now just the provisional podium at sight. He was just 0.5 secs from race leader David Alonso, and 0.132 from the third. Places kept moving around as the end of the race approached, and Dani settled back down in P7. Jose Antonio Rueda made a mistake, meaning that the Red Bull GASGAS Tech3 rider was in 6th, but there was a small gap to Fernandez. In the final lap, the top 3 made it clear that it was going to be between them, while Dani got overtaken by Yamanaka in the last lap. He took P7 of the Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland, adding nine points to his total, as he heads to the summer break third in the championship, one point from Ortola in second, and fifty-nine points from the leader, Alonso.
Jacob Roulstone took a rocket start, and after six laps he was in the top 10 at the back end of the leading group behind teammate Daniel Holgado, with Scott Ogden behind. Lapping at similar times to the front, sometimes faster, the Aussie was putting pressure on Angel Piqueras and Tatsuki Suzuki, looking for the right opportunity to overtake. Unfortunately, as he went on the outside of Piqueras, both riders got in contact, and Jacob pulled an incredible save to stay on his wheels, although he had to go wide and we saw him being downgraded to P19. Big shame for Roulstone who had everything to do again with just ten laps remaining. The next lap, the rookie sadly lost the front in T11, probably still a bit shaken from his save while he was trying to get back into his race rhythm, and the German adventure came to an early end. The rookie delivered a solid race until he crashed, with a strong race pace, so these are the positives that we will take heading to the summer break.
