#CatalanGP - May 25, 2024

The Moto3™ class kicked off a busy day of track action on Saturday at the Gran Premi de Catalunya, as they started with Practice 2, before they went on to the qualifying shootout in the afternoon. Both had provisionally qualified in Q2 after Friday, but there was only Daniel Holgado able to transform it, while Jacob Roulstone had to go through the pre-qualifying stage. Eventually, Holgado qualified in ninth and Roulstone in sixteenth.

Third fastest at the end of play on day 1 in Montmelo, the championship leader Daniel Holgado had managed to improve his bike’s set up in the afternoon after a feeling-less morning. On Saturday morning, the Spaniard was one of the very few riders who did not improve their lap times, but his lap in 1’47.136 from P1 was enough for him to make it to seventh in the combined standing, and qualify for Q2. In the afternoon’s shootout, Holgado was amongst the fastest on track, and was provisionally on the front row until he crashed towards the end of the session. With a best lap in 1’47.549, he will close the third row on Sunday, as he will take off from the ninth position on the grid.

On the other side of the pit box, there was Jacob Roulstone who closed day 1 in P8 on his debuts on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the lightweight class, a decent start to his sixth round in the category. If the start of Practice 2 was not too bad as he sat provisionally in the top 10 while working with his teammate, the rookie was also unable to improve his lap from yesterday, but this time, his 1’47.536 was 0.078 seconds too short to make it to Q2, and he finished in P18. The rookie did a solid Q1 as the action resumed at lunch time, grabbing the final spot with 1’48.296 that allowed him to join his teammate in Q2. As the fastest riders entered the arena for the pole position at stake, Jacob was fast quickly, with a 1’48.054 in the second lap already. He came back to the box a bit early, which reduced his chances to improve his time, and the yellow flag from Holgado’s crash meant that he will start from P16 tomorrow, after he saw his lap which had placed him in P7 being cancelled. Don’t miss the Moto3™ race on Sunday at 11:00 local time (GMT+2), for eighteen laps.

"Today was not an easy day, because I did not get the right feeling on the bike at the start. We weren’t able to find the same feeling in Practice 2 this morning than we had yesterday afternoon, something was different. We worked really hard on the bike setting before qualifying, and I think we got it right because I was fast in qualifying. We crashed in the end, but I am ready to fight for the victory tomorrow. Thank you to my team!"

"We made it to Q2 from Q1 and I am quite happy with our feeling in qualifying, even if I was unlucky in the end and got the yellow flag. The race will be difficult for sure as we will start from the middle, but I am heading to tomorrow feeling confident, the pace is good, and we have everything to try doing a good result on Sunday.”
