Red Bull KTM Tech3 headed to the beautiful Red Bull Ring in Austria this week for the CryptoDATA Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich, the thirteenth (already!) round of the Moto3 World Championship. Following a heavy rain early morning which probably woke up most of the paddock, the action kicked off in wet conditions.

After reaching his first podium of the season two weeks ago in Silverstone at the British Grand Prix, Deniz Oncu was eager to return to the Red Bull Ring with high hopes of confirming his good result. The promising KTM academy rider took his maiden pole position just a year ago in Spielberg, as he became the first Turkish rider to reach a pole position in a Grand Prix.  In FP1, he was amongst the fastest riders on track as his lap in 1’51.102 placed him fourth in the standings. When the action resumed after lunch time on an almost dry layout, times logically went down and the Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider remained one of the fastest of the day. A late lap in 1’41.816 placed him second overall of the day.

On the other side of the garage, Adrian Fernandez came to Austria highly motivated after leaving the rather disappointing results of Silverstone behind him. The wet conditions were a bit challenging for the young Spaniard this morning as he rode in 1’53.609. However, the KTM rookie considerably improved in the afternoon as he gained 10.814 seconds with his lap in 1’42.795. He stands in P20 at the end of Friday, only 0.316 seconds away from the provisional Q2 spots. The action will resume tomorrow at 9:55 local time (GMT+2) for the lightweight class.

Deniz Öncü

Position: 2nd

Time: 1'41.816

Laps: 37

"I enjoy the new chicane here in Austria to be honest. The grip is good and it adds extra fun to the ride, with more adrenaline. The conditions today were tricky because we started in the wet this morning and nearly ended in the dry, before riding in the dry in the afternoon. The pace was good in both conditions and I enjoyed a lot riding the KTM today. Towards the end, I had a crash with another rider, but I am glad that both of us are ok. Good start to the week, let’s hope that we can continue tomorrow."

Adrian Fernandez

Position: 20th

Time: 1'42.795

Laps: 32

"The conditions this morning in the rain were quite difficult for the first Free Practice session, but luckily in the afternoon they got better as the track dried. I felt more comfortable, the feelings were better. I have two corners where I need to improve, so the aim tomorrow morning will be to continue working hard and try to be in the Top 14."
