In bright Italian sunshine, Ayumu Sasaki started out the second Grand Prix at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli well inside the top 10 and with a fastest time of 1:42.277 the Japanese confirmed his provisional Q2 spot in FP2 this afternoon, although he had to sit out the first 15 minutes of the session due to a penalty from last weekend.

His Red Bull KTM Tech3 teammate Deniz Öncü experienced an up and down start to the eighth round of the 2020 season. The Moto3 World Championship rookie overcame two crashes in Free Practice one to finally improve his feeling this afternoon. Öncü concluded Friday in P26 overall, 0.568 seconds behind Sasaki.

Ayumu Sasaki

Position: 11th

Time: 1:42.277

Laps: 26

"It was a positive first day. We did well in FP1, changed small things from last week and tried to improve a bit, because for sure the top guys will be faster here this weekend. In FP1, we tried and some things were working well, so we found a way to improve compared to last week, which is a good start. We still need to be quicker on a single fast lap, because we are P11 in the combined standings, so it’s tight for Q2. Our target this week is to be in Q2 straight away, as in the race we are quite strong. So, we focus fully on Qualifying. We still need to find a small extra and then I think we are quite ready for the race."

Deniz Öncü

Position: 26th

Time: 1:42.845

Laps: 22

"The start of this weekend was actually not so good for me, because already in FP1 I had two crashes, which were not very helpful, plus I managed to do only one fast lap in this first practice, so I finished in 27th. In FP2, it took me some time to regain my confidence. Finally, I managed to reach the 1:42s again, but it was not enough, as the other riders improved. Tomorrow, I will try to go faster."
