Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Ayumu Sasaki showed a great opening day to the Gran Premio di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini today, starting out with the third fastest time in FP1 this morning. The Japanese youngster managed to hold onto a provisional Q2 spot by the end of the day with P8, but was unable to improve his fantastic time in FP2.

Meanwhile Deniz Öncü experienced a slightly different kickoff to the seventh round of his rookie campaign in the Moto3 World Championship. Slow riding in different sectors of the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli in the first session of the day meant that the Turkish rider was suspended from the first 10 minutes of FP2. Nonetheless, he went 0.668 seconds quicker by the end of FP2 to conclude Friday in P26.

"We started very well in FP1. In FP2 we were trying many things for the race. On this track, we are not sure which tyre we are going to use on Sunday, so I was trying the hard tyre, which we didn’t use in any race before. Here we were unsure about the option, so I was riding a lot with the hard option, working on a setting, but with a new soft tyre this setting wasn’t working. So, it’s a bit of mixed feelings, although I feel we did very good. We are on P8, so this is a decent start to the weekend. For sure, we need to improve tomorrow morning and will try to find out what we were missing in FP2. We will try to do our best in Qualifying and keep a strong pace."

Deniz Öncü

Position: 26th

Time: 1:44.194

Laps: 24

"Today I had a quite hard day, because already on my third lap in FP1 I went down and lost a lot of practice time. So finally, I completed only 11 timed laps in the first session. Plus, I did the mistake of riding slow to get the sanction of 10 minutes less in FP2, so I could ride only half an hour. We are quite far to the top at the moment and we need to work a lot in order to close the gap and prepare what will hopefully be a good race on Sunday."
