After Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Deniz Öncü concluded the Free Practice sessions in Austria in P16, he managed to snatch third in Qualifying one today in order to progress to the second session. In the short decisive Q2, he did a best lap time of 1:37.271 in hot conditions, which made him ending up in P11. The Turkish Moto3 World Championship rookie will therefore start the sixth race of 2020 from the fourth row.

With a strong time in this morning’s FP3, Ayumu Sasaki was nearly qualified for Q2 directly, but got his lap canceled by race direction, so the Japanese youngster continued to fight in Qualifying one at lunchtime. In the short session itself he did a 1:37.314, which meant he missed out on Q2 by just 0.047 seconds to start the Grand Prix of Styria tomorrow at 11:00 local time from the front of row seven on the grid.

Deniz Öncü

Position: 11th

Time: 1:37.271

Laps: 5

"In FP3 this morning I was honestly struggling. I tried to push, but the lap times were just not coming, that’s why I was quite disappointed. So I also didn’t really expect to do a great Quali. But when it was time for Qualifying, I actually did a lap time, which was good enough to progress to Q2. In the second session, there was oil towards the end of the track, so I knew I needed to push in the first three sectors to get a fast time. I was quite satisfied with my time in the end, I’m happy with P11. Tomorrow is race day, so we are going to push hard again!"

Ayumu Sasaki

Position: 19th

Time: 1:37.314

Laps: 6

"In FP3 today we made it to Q2, but unfortunately, we had our lap canceled, so we needed to go to Q1 and there, I knew it’s going to be difficult, because everybody tried to do their fast lap and many riders are able to do so with new tyres, so it was clear the gaps would be small. In the end, I felt good, but I couldn’t manage to do one clear lap, I hit some traffic in the last two sectors, so we couldn’t go faster. I’m very disappointed, but now we have to move on. We know, we have a good pace for tomorrow. Last week, we started from P16 and now it’s P19, so it’s not a huge difference. I will try to catch the front again and hopefully we can have a good race."
