Both Red Bull KTM Tech3 riders, Ayumu Sasaki and Deniz Öncü displayed a fine performance during the second race of the 2020 Moto3 World Championship season at the Gran Premio Red Bull de España. The youngsters were working together throughout the 22 scorching laps, after they lost a bit of ground to the top group in the first part of the race. In a great way, they managed to catch up again, doing consistent strong lap times until eventually reached the points scoring positions.

Sasaki did well to get closer and closer to the front and finally saw the chequered flag in 11th position, which means he scored his first five points of the year. While fighting for the top 10 together with his teammate, Öncü unfortunately went down in turn ten with six laps to go, but managed to pick his bike up and at least crossed the line in P25, with the chance to make up for it in seven days for the third race of 2020.

Ayumu Sasaki

Position: 11th

Championship: 16th

Points: 5

"In the race today, we chose the hard tyre again and I think it was a great idea. The team did a fantastic job. In Warm Up we were quite good, but we had a small issue to work on and we managed to improve it. In the beginning of the race, it was difficult to push, because many riders had soft tyres and they were trying so hard, so I stayed calm, knowing that I can come back towards the end. In the middle of the race, I started to feel better and was catching the front. At the same time, I hit some traffic, so I couldn’t completely come back to the top. We finished P11, which is not so bad and it’s the first week in Jerez, so we have a second week to improve. At the moment, the bike is working really well. I just need to have a decent qualifying next weekend in order to have an even better race."

Deniz Öncü

Position: 25th

Championship: 19th

Points: 4

"My start was not so bad, but I did some mistakes, which lead other guys overtaking me. After around seven, eight laps, I was fighting with Ayumu and other riders. Thereby, we lost quite a lot of time and the front was already gone. But then we started to catch up the groups in front of us. I could close a gap of nearly two seconds, but later I crashed and destroyed what could have been a great result. I’m super disappointed and really sorry for that."

Hervé Poncharal

Team Manager

"Another exciting Moto3 race, this time here in Jerez. It was a true shame that both, Ayumu and Deniz couldn’t qualify better. I think this is what we have to work on most at the moment, because we could see that in the race our lap times were exactly identical to the leaders. We were catching the top, at one stage we were more than five seconds behind and we ended up a lot closer. So clearly, our two guys, Ayumu and Deniz have the pace to fight for the front and I would say even for the podium. But we need to qualify better, so we need to work on that, otherwise we will always be struggling and playing catch up. It was a big shame for Deniz. He was the leader, pulling the group towards to the front, but unfortunately, he wanted a bit too much and had a small crash, which ended his race. On the other hand, Ayumu did a brilliant job, never gave up, pushed until the end and grabbed the five points for 11th position. So, congratulations to Ayumu, good job to Deniz and work on the Qualifying for the round next week. But we have the speed and this is the most encouraging fact of the week."
