Following a wet opening session for the Gran Premio de Europa, the Circuit Ricardo Tormo started to dry during FP2 this afternoon. Thereby, Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Deniz Öncü improved his feeling throughout the day and found a decent pace in the second Free Practice, concluding day one in Valencia in 17th position of the combined standings, just 0.063 seconds off a provisional Q2 spot.

At the same time, Ayumu Sasaki, who clinched his first ever Moto3 World Championship podium last time out in Aragón, had a difficult start to the 13th round of 2020. Although he improved by more than 1.5 seconds from the first to the second Free Practice, the Japanese youngster concluded Friday in P30, eager to get closer to the front from FP3 tomorrow at 10.00 local time.

Deniz Öncü

Position: 17th

Time: 1:46.997

Laps: 32

"The conditions today have been quite hard, as it was raining in FP1 and in FP2, the first half was wet, but towards the end of the session, there was a dry line. We decided to take the rain tyres in the end and my lap time with this rubber was quite good. I lost out on the top 14 by just a small gap. FP3 tomorrow might be wet as well, so we will see what we can do there."

Ayumu Sasaki

Position: 30th

Time: 1:51.151

Laps: 31

"It was a difficult first day with the weather conditions. I tried to put in the slicks for the final minutes of FP2, trying to do a decent lap. Unfortunately, I opted for them too early and although I tried two laps, it was not working. I came back to the garage to change back to wets and improved a lot on my final laps, but it was not easy, the conditions were very tricky. It was more about luck. We made a few mistakes, but now we just have to accept this and improve for tomorrow. I try to restart on Saturday, as it will be a completely different story with the weather the next two days."
