Red Bull KTM Tech3’s Deniz Öncü had a great start into day two at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Turkish youngster managed to improve his fastest time from Friday by impressive 1.492 seconds to climb up to fourth in the combined Free Practice standings. In Qualifying two, Öncü did some steady laps to eventually end up in P12, which means he’ll start the seventh round of the 2021 Moto3 World Championship season from the fourth row of the grid.

Meanwhile, Ayumu Sasaki did well to lower his time in FP3 as well. He ended up inside the top 10 and got a clean ticket to Q2. In the decisive session around lunchtime, the Japanese did his fastest laps alone and finished just 0.240 seconds behind his teammate in 14th position, which means he’ll launch off from the fifth row tomorrow at 11:20 local time for the 21 laps race in his second home.

Position: 12th

Time: 1:48.717

"The Qualifying could have been a lot better, but on my fastest lap I came into the traffic, so I couldn’t avoid to be slowed down a bit and had to close the gas. In the end, I did a 1:48.7, but I lost time because of some other riders in T1. P12 is eventually not so bad, so I can’t wait to start the race tomorrow."

Ayumu Sasaki

Position: 14th

Time: 1:48.957

Laps: 5

"It was a difficult Qualifying as always in Moto3. There was a group waiting, so I needed to go alone. P14 is not a fantastic position, but we did it alone, which was good. I’m not very happy with the lap time though, I think I could have done two, three tenths better, so I’m a bit disappointed about myself. Anyway, we feel strong for tomorrow, I think our race pace is good, so we need to be strong in the first laps and then fight for the podium and see where we can end up."
